All exams from Project Management Institute (PMI)® undergo regular updates, and The PM Exam Simulator is updated to match these changes. By making these regular updates PMI® ensures that their certifications are a good reflection of what a certified project manager actually does in his or her field.
Every five to seven years PMI conducts a Role Delineation Study (RDS) for each of its certifications. In essence, this is a big and elaborate survey in which PMI asks thousands of project managers around the world "What do you really do in your job?".
The results of this survey are analyzed and turned into Tasks. The tasks, in turn, are grouped into Domains of the Examination Content Outline, which is then updated accordingly. The notable exception to this process is the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®. This exam is 100% based on A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and no RDS is performed.
PMI then calls on a veritable army of volunteers who will review these Tasks and Domains in order to develop thousands of exam questions that are added to the pool.
This final step is also how questions in The PM Exam Simulator are developed and updated: Our worldwide team of certified project managers reviews the Tasks and Domains from the updated Examination Content Outline, determines any missing areas or areas that need to be updated, and then modify existing questions, develops new ones, and remove those that are outdated. In this way, we ensure that The PM Exam Simulator is always updated to the latest Examination Content Outline.
The latest PMP® Examination Content Outline was published in December 2019 and came into effect on January 2, 2021.
Our team of certified project managers developed questions to match the %-requirements from the outline:
Domain | Percentage of Questions |
I. People | 42% |
II. Process | 50% |
III. Business Environment | 8% |
Total | 100% |
For the PMP® Exam you will have to answer 180 questions within 230 minutes. 50% of the questions will be on plan-driven approaches, and 50% will focus on agile and hybrid methods.
Additionally, questions in The PMP® Exam Simulator are also categorized by Knowledge Areas, so that students can focus on weak areas.
Finally, it is important to note that The PMP Exam is not based on the PMBOK® Guide. This is a common misconception. The truth is that all questions on the PMP® exam are based on the PMP® Examination Content Outline. The PMBOK® Guide is an important study aid and a general reference for anyone preparing for the exam, but the exam itself does not rely 100% on the guide. In essence, this means that you will also find the question in The PMP® Exam Simulator that is not directly related to the PMBOK® Guide. (Appropriate references are provided in the simulator questions).
The latest PMI-ACP® Examination Content Outline was published in December 2014 and came into effect at the same time.
